Safer Schools for Our Children
Every child deserves to feel safe at school. And every parent deserves to know that when they send their child to class in the morning, they’ll come home at the end of the day – safe, secure, and protected.
But let’s be honest: the threat of gun violence in public places – especially in our schools – is real. And while the nation debates, our children and teachers are the ones left most vulnerable.
As a father, a former teacher, and a current school board member, I hate that we have to think this way. But in the absence of real movement in Congress – when even the most basic, common-sense gun safety reforms stall out -we’re left to do what we can with the tools we have.
That’s why I support implementing urgent school safety upgrades. Every classroom door should lock from the inside – not just by the teacher, but by anyone who needs to act in an emergency. Windows should be raised to at least nine feet, reducing vulnerability and buying precious time in a crisis.
No, we shouldn’t have to build schools like fortresses. But this is the reality we’re in – and protecting our kids can’t wait for Washington to act.
These aren’t radical ideas. They’re immediate, achievable, and rooted in the kind of common sense that puts safety first – without giving up on the long fight for broader change.
Because when students feel safe, they can learn. When teachers feel supported, they can teach. And when families know their schools are secure, they can breathe a little easier.
We owe them that peace of mind – even when the system fails to deliver it.
Escuelas Más Seguras para Nuestros Hijos
Todo niño merece sentirse seguro en la escuela. Y todo padre merece saber que, al enviar a su hijo a clases por la mañana, lo verá regresar al final del día seguro, protegido y a salvo.
Pero seamos honestos: la amenaza de la violencia armada en lugares públicos especialmente en nuestras escuelas es real. Y mientras el país sigue debatiendo, nuestros niños y maestros siguen siendo los más vulnerables en todo momento.
Como padre, ex maestro y actual miembro de una junta escolar, me duele que tengamos que pensar en estas cosas. Pero ante la falta de acción real en el Congreso cuando incluso las reformas más básicas y de sentido común se estancan nos queda actuar con las herramientas que tenemos a nivel local.
Por eso apoyo la implementación urgente de medidas de seguridad escolar. Cada puerta de aula debe poder cerrarse desde adentro, no solo por el maestro, sino por cualquier persona que deba actuar en una emergencia. Las puertas ya no tendrán ventanas que puedan romperse para abrirlas desde fuera. Cada aula nueva tendrá dos vías de salida. Las ventanas estarán elevadas a por lo menos nueve pies. Todas estas medidas son formas prácticas de reducir la vulnerabilidad, ganar tiempo y salvar vidas en una crisis.
No, no deberíamos tener que construir escuelas como fortalezas. Pero esta es la realidad que enfrentamos y proteger a nuestros hijos no puede esperar a que Washington actúe. Estas no son ideas radicales; son inmediatas, realizables, y basadas en el sentido común sin abandonar la lucha más amplia por un cambio real.
Porque cuando los estudiantes se sienten seguros, pueden aprender. Cuando los maestros se sienten respaldados, pueden enseñar. Y cuando las familias saben que las escuelas son seguras, pueden estar un poco más tranquilas que las vidas de sus hijos están fuera de riesgo.
Les debemos esa tranquilidad, incluso cuando el sistema les falle.
